André Heucq

André Heucq is the epitome of authenticity, biodynamics and “Meunier power”. Geographically, we are located in the Marne valley a little northwest of Reims in the village of Cuisles. Cuisles is known for its completely unique terroir of sand, then a completely unique type of green clay, which contains nutritious algae extracts that contribute to the vines’ beautiful growing conditions. The third layer is lime as we know it from the entire Champagne region. André Heucq is a biodynamicist and working with nature is a high priority, e.g. all field work is carried out with horses and without mechanical aids. The great passion is the Menuier grape.

Remi Leroy

The house is located in the southernmost part of Champagne in Meurville, Aube, where the Leroy family has for generations sold grapes to the big champagne houses, which finances the operation of its own label, Remy Leroy, which amounts to approx. 1/3 of the family’s 9 hectares. The underground in Meurville differs markedly from the more well-known and traditional areas of northern Champagne. Here in the south, the soil type is shared with Chablis, so you might think it is mainly Chardonnay as in Chablis, but it is actually the Pinot Noir grape that is primarily grown in the area. Remy Leroy’s 9 hectares consist of 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier. In terms of style, the champagnes are characterized by late harvest for optimally ripe grapes, low dosage and high aromatics.

Champagne
Blanc de Blancs 2019, Brut Nature

Vintage
2019 was challenging. The winter was unusually mild, February almost warm continuing into spring. Then dramatic changes and frost in April causing frost damages in the vineyards. Pre summer was very problematic with heat wave that nearly burnt grapes on the vine, especially for the light skinned Pinot Noir. Brutal hail raged in August and harvest was very limited. However, the surviving grapes were of superior quality and 2019 landed as a small but exceptional vintage.

Harvest had to be early, which for Chardonnay turned out fine, for Pinot Noir excellent while Meunier was at risk for over ripening.
